Students started Monday, 8/24,
with an assembly in the Gil Truitt Activities Center. Staff was
introduced, a brief Mt. Edgecumbe High School history was covered, and
Mr. Gurule described the academic and activity challenges that are
available to all MEHS students.
Mr. Gurule, Academic Principal, asks for student attention by raising
his hand. Student Council officers help him. Mr.
Kimber (alumni and teacher - facing) and Mr. Mahoney (back of the head)
look on.

Candace Schaak, student body president, opened the assembly with a
welcome to all students.
All 400 students can barely fit in the Activities Center. They
look energetic and ready to go, even after a late night getting to
Sitka!
The day starts and ends with a meeting! The student body is
meeting in the cafeteria at 10 p.m. for an "All Dorm" meeting.
Here they are being introduced to all the dorm and recreation
personnel. You can just barely see Mr. Friske, residential
assistant principal, talking about behavioral expectations.
Edgecamp
Students are introduced to MEHS and the
community of Sitka through Edgecamp activities. Each student
participated in four major groups of activities.
- One group took a bus tour of Sitka and visited the "community
farm."
- One group conducted fun science problem solving activities,
learned how to use the weight rooom, and learned to play "Caribou Ball."
- One group went through State required health screening, learned
about cultural awareness, learned how to use their email and network
accounts, and participated in a short session in how to be successful
in class.
- One group was suppose to do some local hiking around Sitka, but
the weather was so atrocious that they participated in alternate
activities such as using the Student Union Building to play games.
Wednesday afternoon, 8/26/09, students
went to class for a short class session and then went to the gym for an
ice cream social.
When asked what her favorite class was, Ms. Erin Nay, senior, stated
"Don't know - classes just started yesterday!"
I pressed her further and she admitted that, "Leadership Class is on
top of my favorites. It's a class that not only benefits me, but
can benefit other people as well."
Shaylin Storms admitted that, "Journalism is going to be great."

Mr. Rashick's computerized accounting class gets ready for the very
first class. Mr. Rashick has taught at MEHS since it opened as a
State school in 1985.
Making sure that each of 400 students has a good schedule can be
challenging. Mr. Anderson helps students refine their schedule in
the library.
Mr. Mahoney's class is ready to go on the first day!
There are two major social activities
planned this weekend. Tonight, Friday, there is a "Block Party"
with bonfires, music, games, and lots of activities. Saturday
night is the first dance of the year - and it's free!
