The Mt. Edgecumbe Braves wrestling team is off to a good start in 2009.
The Braves took third place at a tournament in Hoonah Saturday, with five of the 10 wrestlers coach Mike Kimber brought to northeast Chichagof Island wrestling into the finals.
The Braves racked up 81 points to take third place behind Hoonah (146) and Craig (89).
But Edgecumbe did enough to beat Thunder Mountain, Juneau-Douglas, Haines, Skagway and Hydaburg.
Kimber was encouraged by the results, but said it was a little too early to start readjusting the goals for an Edgecumbe team that is fairly young and inexperienced.
``It was a fun tournament to be at, but by no means should there be a judgment'' Kimber said, noting the absence of Petersburg, Sitka and Wrangell, three of the better teams in Southeast. ``There was a lot to be happy about, but we won't know until we get our full varsity out there.''
Fritz Guy, a sophomore from Kwethluk, took second at 103 pounds for Edgecumbe Saturday.
There were four other second-place finishers for the Braves: Kory Joe, a freshman from Mountain Village, at 112; Luki Akelkok, a junior from Dillingham, at 152; Jared Menadelook, a junior from Diomede at 145 and Adam Iyapana at 189.
The Braves will wrestle cross-town rival Sitka High Tuesday night at the B.J. McGillis Gymnasium on Japonski Island. This weekend, the Braves will be in Metlakatla for a tournament.
