Three-time state placer Terry Rogers  led a group of seven Mt. Edgecumbe Braves who placed in the top four of their respective weight classes at a tournament in Wrangell last weekend.

Rogers won at 145 pounds and continued his dominance in 2009. The Edgecumbe grappler, who hails from Dillingham, is undefeated on the season, though he'll surely be tested this weekend at the annual Anchorage Christian School tournament.

The tournament draws the top small-school wrestlers in the state and is viewed as a barometer of how seeding at the 3A state tournament will play out.

Six other Edgecumbe wrestlers placed in the top four at the Wrangell tournament. Fritz Guy was second at 103, losing 5-0 in the final to Tanner Thain. Guy has yet to beat the freshman from Craig this year, but the gap appears to be closing, MEHS coach Mike Kimber said.  Ian Sia also captured second place, losing in the 135-pound final to a wrestler from Ketchikan. Mt. Edgecumbe's Daniel Villasenor was third at 119.

At 171, Stefan Weingarth ended up third, while Donovan Phillip was fourth at 189. Jaylin Prince, who wrestled at 215 for the Braves, was second. Prince lost in the finals to Patrick Quigley, of Craig. Quigley managed to avenge an early season loss to Prince in what could have been a preview of a Region V final at 215.

Rogers, Prince and Sia will be joined by a few other Braves in Anchorage this weekend.

After the ACS tournament, MEHS will travel to Ketchikan for a tournament Nov. 20-21. The Kayhi tourney will be the final tune-up before the Region V tournament, set for Dec. 4-5 in Petersburg.

Edgecumbe and Sitka High, seemingly the top two teams in Southeast, are scheduled to face off in two more duals before the season is out, with the matches set for Nov. 17 and Nov. 24.

So far this year, the Sitka Wolves and Braves have met twice, with each team winning one of the tight contests. Edgecumbe beat SHS 33-30, before Sitka took a 32-30 victory at the end of last month.
