The Mt. Edgecumbe High Braves and Lady Braves had a tough trip across the O’Connell Bridge to Sitka High on Feb. 10.
The host Sitka High Wolves beat the Mt. Edgecumbe boys 57-50 in an exciting contest that saw the Braves claw back into the game in the final minutes at SHS. And after a performance from the Gaja Heen dancers, the Sitka High Lady Wolves beat the Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves 49-23 to take a two-game lead in the Southeast 3A girls conference.
Robert Kruger (Nulato) led the Braves with 12 points, while John Peterson (Golovin) had 11 and Daniel Peters (Sitka) added 9 points and 7 rebounds.
For the Lady Braves, Christina Fields and Lainey Beaver, a pair of players from Kotzebue, each had 7 points.
The Braves trailed 48-38 with five minutes to go, but staged an impressive rally to get within a point at 48-47 with just under two minutes to play. Sitka held on for the win with some clutch free-throw shooting.
The Lady Braves stayed close to Sitka in the first half and trailed 19-17 at the break. But the Sitka girls held Mt. Edgecumbe to just 12 points in the second half and put the game away with an 11-0 run at the third of the third quarter. With the loss, the Lady Braves fell to 10-2 overall and 7-2 in the conference. The Sitka High Lady Wolves improved to 15-2 overall and 7-0 in the conference.
