The Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves begin February 8-1 after beating the Petersburg Lady Vikings back-to-back nights at B.J. McGillis Gymnasium.
The Lady Braves dominated the action on Japonski Island Friday night, taking a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter on their way to a 53-29 win.
Lainey Beaver (Kotzebue) led the Lady Braves with 15 points, while Christina Fields (Kotzebue) had 13 and Nicole Pingayak (Chevak) chipped in 8.
Petersburg managed to keep the came close Saturday, but the Lady Braves built a 20-8 halftime lead and weathered a late Petersburg rally for a 36-28 win.
“Overall, I’m happy with the way we played,” MEHS Coach Carl Blackhurst said.
In the win Saturday night, Beaver scored 14 points and Whitney Weber (Anaktuvuk Pass) had 7. The Braves never got going offensively, but stifled the Lady Vikings with zone defense.
Leading 28-14 after three quarters, the Lady Braves withstood a few late baskets by Petersburg and won 36-28. The wins improved the Lady Braves to 5-1 in 3A Southeast Conference play. Sitka High leads the conference at 6-0, while Petersburg stands at 6-2.
Mt. Edgecumbe will travel to Wrangell for two games Feb. 5-6.
