FAQ

What is the student fee at MEHS?

Students enrolled in Mt. Edgecumbe High School are required to pay a $250 activity fee.

This fee is collected annually at the beginning of each school year to help support the entire student body. This fee guarantees your student a yearbook each year they attend, provides fun and educational activities during and after school hours for the whole school year at no additional charge. The activity fee is non-refundable, and is assessed to every student enrolled at Mt Edgecumbe High School.

There is a proposed increase to the Student Activity Fee from $250 to $375 per student. This change is pending approval by the State Board of Education and the Governor. If the increase is approved, we will provide families with details on the process for submitting the additional payment.

When can I submit an application?

The application period starts February 1 and runs through June 15 of each year. The earlier you apply, the better your chances of being admitted.  No applications or components of applications are accepted late.

What are my days during the week like?

Students start school at 8:30 a.m. and finish at 3:35 p.m.

Unless students are behind in their schoolwork, they may go to town or participate in a variety of clubs, recreational activities, or sports until dinner.

Students also have “detail,” which means that each person must help keep their area clean.

After school until 8:00 p.m., students can go to the Student Union Building (SUB) for snacks, ping-pong, pool, movies, snacks, or socializing; to the gym for exercise, sports, and basketball; the main dorm for socializing; the cultural room for cultural activities; or various special activities that are offered on the dorm floors or off campus.

New for the 2023-2024 school year, rather than mandatory study hall, the dorms will begin Quiet Hour at 8:30 p.m. so students can gradually wind down for the evening, focusing on studies and quieter activities until 10:00 p.m., when all students are expected to be back in their own dorms.

10:30 p.m. is LIGHTS OUT!

Are students allowed off campus?

Students may be checked out by staff or by adults authorized by the parents. Students have “town leave” 5 or 6 times a week in which they may walk to town for shopping or other activities such as movies, restaurants, and more.

How is the food?

Students are served three meals a day, seven days a week. There is always a salad and fruit bar for lunches and dinners. Students have at least three choices for the main course at lunch and dinner. In student surveys, the majority of students think the food is fairly good, but would like to see more foods like caribou, seal, and other traditional foods. We do serve Alaska salmon and halibut, though!

What Other Student Services Look Like at MEHS

We try to meet all student needs with a broad range of services. We have a Health Clinic on campus, we staff counselors at both the academic and dorm areas. We are working to improve handicap access, but it is challenging for students on crutches. For students with special education enrollment, please read this attached letter. SPECIAL EDUCATION ENROLLMENTS.
